If you are wondering whether Metamucil helps you to lose weight, we have the inside scoop.
My parents have been using Metamucil for years to help them go to the toilet (they’re very constipated LOL).
I used to rag them out BIG time and tell them how disgusting Metamucil was so I felt like a total hypocrite when I turned to it myself. To be fair, it does go all gluggy and look quite disgusting in a cup but it honestly doesn’t taste bad at all.
And yes, it can help with weight loss.
Disclaimer: I have no association with Metamucil whatsoever and Metamucil did in no way sponsor my review. But if you would like to try it after reading, we would really appreciate you purchasing yours through the link here, as it provides our site with a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Does Metamucil help you lose weight?
I personally started my Metamucil journey when my cholesterol spiked and I needed to lose a bit of weight (didn’t have my parents toilet issue thankfully but it does work for constipation too in case you are wondering!)
If you don’t want to read to the end of the article, the answer is yes, I found that Metamucil helped me to lose weight but I should note that I used Metamucil alongside a healthy diet and exercise routine.
I was planning my wedding trip to Africa and didn’t want to look like a chunky monkey in my dress. With one month to go before my trip, I went from 130 pounds (59kg) to 120 pounds (54.5kg) with the assistance of my trusty Metamucil.
Now, as I said above, I don’t believe Metamucil was the only factor in my 10 pound weight loss. I ate healthy (trying to stay in a caloric deficit) and I did pilates everyday, with the help of a few trusty youtube videos.
As a side note, I really love pilates because you don’t require a gym membership and there are plenty of free pilates videos on youtube to try. It is also low impact so I don’t have to get an ugly sweat on to exercise.
How does Metamucil help you lose weight?
Metamucil is not a miracle weight loss drug and you shouldn’t think it will give you the same effects as say Ozempic. But in some ways it works the same way. I like to think of it as the healthy version of Ozempic.
How it helps you lose weight is through appetite suppression and keeping you full between meals. A similar concept to Ozempic.
For example, if you are trying to stay in a caloric deficit you are going to be pretty hungry and sometimes that hunger can get the best of you.
I always feel like I’ve had an extra meal when I take Metamucil and this in turns makes it easier to shed a few extra pesky pounds.
Here are some other Metamucil benefits:
- Feel lighter and more active;
- Appetite control;
- Heart health by lowering cholesterol;
- Digestive health;
- Is a daily cleanser for your insides.
So Metamucil is healthy for you, and you can take it whether you want to lose weight or not as it holds a myriad of other benefits. The calories are super low too.
How does Metamucil help Appetite Suppression?
Metamucil helps appetite suppression as the fiber contained in Metamucil means it takes longer for your body to digest food and therefore you feel fuller for longer.
Naturally when you feel full, you don’t feel like tucking into a big Five Guys Burger.
You feel full because the Metamucil expands in your stomach. In turn, your stomach tells your brain “Hey there brain I’m full” and you don’t feel the need to constantly open the fridge and snack all day.
Another reason that Metamucil helps with weight loss is that foods that are high in fiber assist with the release of hunger hormones, such as ghrelin.
Basically, it keeps this hormone at bay and stops you craving and really wanting food all day long. I don’t know if it is just me but the worst part about trying to lose weight is your brain complaining that it is hungry AF allll day.
What is Metamucil?
Metamucil is not a weight loss product, it is a fiber supplement that has been designed to improve digestive health and provide regular bowel movements.
If a person does not get enough fiber in their diet, issues like my parents have experienced occur like constipation and bloating.
What is it made of and what are the health benefits of Metamucil?
The main ingredient in Metamucil is psyllium husk which is made from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant.
The psyllium husk is made of soluble and insoluble fiber. If you have ever tried Metamucil you will notice that it gets gluggy if you leave it too long before drinking it – this is the soluble fiber at play which assists to soften the bowl movement and pass it more easily through the intestines.
The insoluble fiber adds bulk to the poop which makes us regular. The bulk in your stool can also assist with blood sugar levels as fiber slows down the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream, providing a slower, more stable release of energy throughout the day.
As I said above, I never had any problem with bowel movements so I was never particularly drawn to Metamucil until I learnt it was also a good weight loss aid and that it helps with cholesterol.
Another big benefit of the supplement is that it has a positive impact on your gut microbiome. Aka It provides more beneficial bacteria in your gut.
My Metamucil for weight loss tips
Metamucil is not a miracle weight loss drug. You can’t chow down what you like and have Metamucil and think you’ll lose weight. BUT it can assist you to stay on track with your diet due to its ability to suppress your appetite.
Here are my top Metamucil weight loss tips:
1. Stay in a caloric deficit
Weight loss is nothing more than a simple equation of calories in and calories out. You can calculate your BMR here and then all you need to do is eat less than that.
Remember, healthy weight loss takes time so be prepared to wait at least a month before you start getting disappointed by the lack of results showing on the scale. I have to keep reminding myself the same thing!
2. Stay active and healthy
Exercise helps you stay in a caloric deficit. It also tones your body. If you don’t like high intensity exercise like running and you don’t have a gym membership, you can try pilates as it really works for me.
You can find beginner pilates routines easily on youtube. I also really love that pilates keeps you to target and tone areas you aren’t happy with.
3. Make your Metamucil into a paste and eat it like a meal
Now this comment is controversial as everyone I have told has nearly vomited at the thought of making Metamucil into a paste but it really helped me as I felt like I was eating a proper meal when consuming it this way.
To make your Metamucil into a paste all you have to do is place a tablespoon of the power into a cup of cold water and wait 10 minutes or until it becomes thick. Then voila! You have your own Metamucil custard meal!
4. Have a glass of Metamucil at the tough times during the day
I always find desert or after dinner a rough time. I have a sweet tooth and I feel the need to go into the fridge digging for a treat.
I found that consuming my Metamucil paste curbs my need to snack at this difficult time and made me also feel like I was having a nice desert. I could pretend that it was a delicious custard rather than an orange flavor gunk. Although I have to tell you, it really isn’t even that bad!
One big cup of orange gunk custard is only setting me back 30 calories too – yippee!!
As it is a sweet drink, this will really help the sweet tooth’s out there.
