I have been enjoying my homemade Microdermabrasion Scrub recipe lately. Microdermabrasion scrubs have smaller particles than typical facial scrubs. They slough off the dead skin cells to reveal softer, smoother skin.
Technically speaking, microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure performed by a medical professional. A real microdermabrasion treatment will set you back well over $100. And you’ll need to do it once a month for best results.
Lately though, it’s been a beauty buzz word with microdermabrasion scrubs popping up in stores. Microdermabrasion scrubs are said to exfoliate and help reduce scarring, sun damage, and discoloration on the face and stretch marks on the body.
I’ve used store bought dermabrasion scrubs, and I loved the results. My skin was smoother, softer, and my pore and fine lines were less noticeable. Even though the ones I bought were about $30 for several uses, I made my own microdermabrasion scrub recipe for just pennies with ingredients that I already had.
My DIY microdermabrasion scrub recipe works just as well as the ones that I’ve bought, and I know exactly what’s in it. One of the reasons that I like this recipe, besides how well it works, is that it uses two ingredients that I always have on hand: baking soda and coconut oil.
The coconut oil acts as a carrier oil to carry the baking soda. It also moisturizes the skin while being naturally antimicrobial. The baking soda dissolves excess oil while gently buffing off the top layer of the skin.
If you’ve never used a microdermabrasion scrub before, you need to be aware that it is more intense than other facial scrubs. If you have sensitive skin, this might not be the best scrub for your skin. Consider using one of these Raw Honey Mask Recipes or one of these 8 Face Mask Recipes instead.
I do get some redness with this scrub, but it goes away in a few hours. I always use it at night so no one notices the redness.
HOMEMADE MICRODERMABRASION SCRUB RECIPE
If your coconut oil is hard, warm it in the microwave or set it in warm water. You want it soft but not melted.
Combine the soft coconut oil and baking soda. Stir well. Spoon into a jar.
Scoop about a tablespoon of the scrub and gently scrub your face in a circular motion. You want to remove the top layer of skin, but be careful not to hurt your skin.
This scrub can also be used as a mask. Simply spread on your face, avoiding the eye area and let sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing.
I have oily skin with enlarged pores. I use this mask once a week and a charcoal face mask once a week as well. I use them 3-4 days apart so I don’t irritate my skin.
