Love it… Made some earlier 2day and just tried it in shower… Only problem is if you get your hair in it…then it’s super greasy when dried…but that happens with all sugar scrubs because of the oil in them. I would rate it 5/5

Hi. What is the shelf life of homemade body scrubs? Thanks
Elizabeth Walling says
It can vary based on the ingredients, it’s usually a couple of months.
Haylee says
This would be my first attempt and I am working a recipe
What if I replaced the sugar with salt
Or Combined both with salt in a higher quantity
Would that potentially extend the shelf life with salt acting as a preservative?
Thanks for the help 🙂
Elizabeth Walling says
It really depends on the recipe. As long as there isn’t liquid like water in a recipe, even sugar/oil combinations will have a long shelf life.

I used coconut oil to make my sugar scrubs according to the recipes (I made the cranberry one). When I tried to use it today it was really hard. Is there something I can do to keep it soft?
Elizabeth Walling says
There’s always the risk of coconut oil getting hard if your house is cool. Next time it might help to do 1/2 coconut oil and 1/2 liquid oil so it will stay soft enough to use.
Abby Bagnall says
Hi Elizabeth,
Is it okay to swap the sugar for salt?
Thanks
Elizabeth Walling says
You definitely can! Salt is more drying and a little harsher on the skin, so be a little cautious.

Greta flavor ideas! Question- if someone hates coconut oil but sill wants a more firm scrub like where the oil and salt don’t separate as much what would you use? I’ve heard of vegetable shortening for candles but any advice for scrubs? Thanks!!
Elizabeth Walling says
You can also use shea butter or cocoa butter. They are very firm, you you might need to melt them with a liquid oil like jojoba or sweet almond to keep them from being too firm (1/3 liquid and 2/3 shea or cocoa butter is about right).
