Do you want to pay $76 for an eyelash growth serum? If so, you’re totally in the wrong place — because I’m going to show you how to make your own DIY eyelash growth serum recipe for just about $2 (including the cost of the mascara tube!). Sound like fun? Let’s do this.
Why I Picked These Eyelash Growth Serum Ingredients
Castor Oil: Literally like food for your lashes. Castor oil is full of nourishing fatty acids like ricinoleic acid that moisturize and protect your lashes.
Think about it — we’re always moisturizing our hair and skin, which can get dried out from the weather, washing with soap, etc. But our poor lashes get left out!
And on top of that, mascara and eye makeup can dry lashes out even more. Dry lashes get tangled and damaged and tend to fall out more easily. The best way to prevent this is to moisturize them!
Lavender and Cedarwood Essential Oils:
Both lavender and cedarwood oils are well known for supporting healthy hair follicles and lash growth. They are also both very calming and soothing oils, perfect for dry or sensitive skin!
Note: Do not get in your eyes!
Essential oils are awesome, but they aren’t meant to go in your eyes. Seriously. So as a precaution, just make sure you don’t get any in your eyes — using a thin layer helps.
This eyelash growth serum recipe is already diluted, but it still may sting a bit if it goes IN the eyes. If that happens — DO NOT WASH WITH WATER.
Get a little more oil (castor, coconut, sweet almond, any vegetable oil will work), and massage it over your eyes to clean it out. Then wipe excess oil away with warm water.
How long until you notice results?
Since it takes time to nourish and restore healthy lashes, you need to use your serum consistently for 1-3 months to see a difference.
DIY Eyelash Growth Serum
Ingredients
- castor oil
- lavender essential oil
- cedarwood essential oil
Instructions
- First, open the bottle take out the mascara wand. There will be a little plastic insert thingy you’ll want to take out, too (what is the technical name for that thing??). Trust me, you will regret it if you don’t (yes, I spilled castor oil all over my bathroom counter just to make sure you don’t have to).
- Fill the bottle about 3/4 of the way full with castor oil. If you use the bottles I recommended above, that will be just over 1/2 teaspoon of castor oil. It doesn’t take much!
- Add 1 drop of lavender essential oil and 1 drop of cedarwood essential oil.
- Replace plastic insert thingy, put the wand in the bottle, and close it tight. Shake gently to mix ingredients.
- Apply a thin layer nightly before bed to give your lashes some love! This recipe is shelf stable for a looooong time. Let’s just say 6 months to be safe. But that’s definitely erring on the safe side.
Notes
- I use these empty mascara bottles because it makes applying this serum SO much easier. They are honestly the most expensive thing about this recipe — and they are pretty cheap! ????
- These are my favorite essential oils — I’ve been used them for almost 6 years now and they are AMAZING. ????

Where did you purchase the mascara bottles?
I ordered them on Amazon. 🙂
Which ones did you purchase from Amazon because there are many to choose from? Thanks
The ones I got ended up breaking easily and I’m not sure I can recommend them. I think it was these: http://amzn.to/2vED3Gs I would recommend trying another style.
I used an old mascara tube that I already had. I made sure there was no old clumpy mascara in it and just filled it up. I also put lavender and cedar-wood oil in my regular mascara it last so much longer.
Thank you for the recipe it was the castor oil that I was missing.
I just mixed mine up! I will start tonight.
I have developed scar tissue under my left eye that I am currently bringing back to normal with Sacred Frankincense. I have been without lashes in this area for two years. So I will let you know how it goes. ?
Frankincense is my favorite oil to apply to scar tissue!
I hadn’t heard that! Does it work on surgical scars? Presently I’m 3months post op and massaging with coconut oil.
Definitely any scar tissue. Lavender and frankincense is my favorite combo for a skin serum. They are wonderful in coconut oil.
Thanks for the info, will give it a try!
This recipe is awesome and works like magic! But just a word of caution, do not use for over 2 to 3months straight. Take a month or 2 off before restarting the regimen. The lashes grow so long and continues to grow that it starts to bend inwards and poke the lower lashline. Happened to me twice!! Ouch
Yikes! Good to know.
Why not mix in a syrynge, shake it up and the tip makes it easy to get it in the mascara bottle.
OMG, you’re a genius! I love that idea. Must do next time.
Do you know if you can use cedar wood oil if you are allergic to cedar?
I would say no as a precaution. Please talk to a health professional about the safety of essential oils when you have allergies. I would play it safe and leave it out.
Use rosemary instead with lavender
look at Pinterest for eyelash growth serum recipes. I’m sure there are many w/o cedarwood oil.
This is very interesting. On the part about getting it in your eyes, the method for cleaning it out – do you use all of the oils combined as a mixture to clean or can you use one of the mentioned oils – also, were you giving an option of the oils to choose from. Thank you for your reply.
You can use any of those oils, just whatever carrier oil or vegetable oil you have on hand.
hi, just wondering, what is the essention oil function? does it have a great effect to accomplish longer lashes?
In my experience, the EOs stimulate the hair follicle to support healthy growth. It helps with hair on the head too. 😉
Can you use cocoanut oil instead of castor oil?
Liquid fractionated coconut oil, yes, but solid coconut oil would most likely clog the tube if it got even a little too cold. Plus, castor oil is specifically known for its hair nourished benefits, so I wouldn’t want you to miss out on those. 🙂
Lol. The plastc thingy is called a “plug”. But I like “thingy” better.
Thank you for sharing. Will try it soon.
Ah, a plug. Makes sense. I like “thingy” too though.
The plastic thingy is officially known as an orifice reducer. thingy works well too 🙂
I’m definitely sticking with thingy! lol
I tried a different eyelash growth diy recipe a while ago and I am looking forward to trying the one you’ve suggested. Thank you for sharing it!
I just so happened to have all ingredients and so I made my own castor oil /essential oil eyelash serum. Using it for the 1st time tonight. Excited! Thanks for sharing your diy recipe!
I have been putting castor oil on my eyelashes for about a month and can notice a difference. I don’t use any essential oils but may try it with some added. I also read that putting castor oil on eyelids helps one get a deeper sleep. So I add a bit on my eyelids as well. Not sure if its psychological or not, but it seems to help!
Wow, that’s awesome! So happy to hear about your results. Definitely see if adding the EOs helps, too. Cedarwood and lavender are both relaxing too, so that could help even more with sleep!
Hi, what brand of castor oil do you recomend?
I don’t have a particular brand that I always use, but the Now brand I link to in the post is always a safe bet.
